Farmerline Named in TIME Magazine’s Annual List of Best Inventions

Web and mobile application Mergdata, an agritech platform developed by Ghanaian-founded company Farmerline, has been named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Best Inventions of 2019.

TIME revealed its annual list of the 100 Best Inventions that are ‘making the world better, smarter and even a bit more fun’ late last month.

Mergdata received the honour for powering over 200,000 farmers across 13 African countries. The software’s modules for farmer profiling, mapping, certification, traceability, messaging and digital payments are used by over 60 organizations to qualify and provide farmers with the necessary resources they need to increase productivity and profit.

Following the announcement, co-founder and CEO Alloysius Attah said: ‘Six years ago, [co-founder] Emmanuel and I started building Farmerline’s Mergdata platform with a $600 prize from Mobile Web Ghana. Our collective backgrounds and interests focused our mission on building an enterprise that connected farmers to resources that increased their profit through the use of digital tools. We became coders by learning from countless coding tutorials online and friends.’

He added: ‘Along this journey, we were lucky enough to attract and work with the best mission-driven professionals from around the world to grow this platform into what it is today. Our team has owned this work and the platform and made it even better than we ever imagined.’

Alloysius and team were congratulated during AB2020’s recent sixth Tech in Ghana Accra event where he led the Driving Young People in to the Agri Sector through the Use of Technology panel featuring Honourable Kwasi Etu-Bonde MP; AgroCenta CEO Francis Obirikorang, and others (below).
